The internship focuses on the development of a new instrumental hyphenation associating digital microfluidic platform with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (µDig-ICPMS). It will be supervised by two different laboratories of CEA Saclay (DRF/LIONS and DEN/LANIE).
These last years have seen in several laboratories around the world such as DRF/LIONS, the development of microfluidics platforms to create and manipulate calibrated liquid droplets inside a continuous liquid phase (µDig). These platforms are relevant not only for low-sample or low-waste volumes analysis but also for new analytical concepts such as heterogeneous samples analysis (determination of objects population) or molecules screening.
The traineeship purpose is to fabricate microfluidic chips to generate water droplets of predefined-size inside a continuous oil phase. The chip design will minimize the oil consumption while being compatible with the ICPMS requirement. Droplets will be visualized by rapid camera settled on microscope or telephoto lens. This study aims to define both microfabrication material and chemical system (oil, surfactant) as well as droplets ejection from microfluidic platform to ICPMS argon plasma.
Internship duration is at least 6 months. The work could possibly be continued in PhD (nanoparticles encapsulation on microfluidic platform and SPICPMS). This interdisciplinary thematic requires team work ability, large scientific curiosity and openness. Instrumentation being a large component of this study, the candidate must show a commitment for experimental laboratory work. A competence in microfabrication, 3D printing or analytical chemistry will be fully appreciated.
