Our Harwell Oxford Campus is home to world-leading science including the ISIS neutron source, Central Laser Facility, Diamond Light Source, space and high performance computing and technology. Job Title: Instrument Scientist - Excitations and Polarized Neutrons Salary is in the range: £26,610 to £37,534 (dependent upon experience) Contract type: Permanent (open ended) Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ISIS is a world leading facility for condensed matter research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links. We support a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology, materials engineering and IT, as well as fundamental physics and chemistry investigations. The Excitations & Polarized Neutron Group at ISIS is seeking an Instrument Scientist to work on the Merlin chopper spectrometer. Merlin is one of several inelastic neutron spectrometers at ISIS, which allow dynamical investigations of materials covering timescales from the femto-second to the nano- second range. ISIS has an international reputation for building innovative neutron instruments, with massive wide angle position sensitive detector arrays, tunable energy resolution and a combination of high flux and low background; and crucially this is backed up by the development of world-leading data analysis software. The duties of the Instrument Scientist on Merlin are: . to provide scientific and technical support to scientific visitors to ISIS, particularly on Merlin . to work as part of a team to develop novel instrumentation, techniques and software . to conduct an active programme of research using Merlin and/or other instruments at ISIS We are looking for applicants with: . A PhD (or equivalent) in one of the physical sciences (chemistry, physics, material science, earth science, etc) . Research experience in lattice dynamics, magnetism, phase transitions, crystallography, molecular spectroscopy, disordered materials or dynamics in soft matter . The ability and drive to pursue an independent research programme . Interest in the development of novel neutron instrumentation and techniques For further information on this post please contact: Dr Ross Stewart, +44 (0)1235 446287, ross.stewart@stfc.ac.uk Dr Rob Bewley, +44 (0)1235 445112, rob.bewley@stfc.ac.uk Applications are handled by the RCUK Shared Services Centre; to apply please visit our job board at http://www.topcareer.jobs and upload your CV with covering letter.
