MEI will ensure ORNL to be at the forefront of knowledge using the neutron scattering facilities at SNS and HFIR to solve problems in both materials and engineering fundamental and applied areas where neutron scattering is advantageous. Currently, MEI emphasizes on the advanced materials behaviors under extreme stimuli or services. As a postdoctoral fellow you will work with the initiative scientists on one of the three science topics, accelerated advanced alloys design for extreme engineering applications, nuclear materials and radiation effect, and materials response during advanced manufacturing/processing. Your core research will involve performing diffraction, small angle scattering and imaging neutron measurements on the world leading instruments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL. This position represents an excellent opportunity to conduct materials and engineering study in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment at ORNL, and you will have access to other world leading facility or capability of ORNL such as center for nanophase science (CNMS), and high performance computing (HPC) etc. Major Duties and Responsibilities * Design and perform neutron scattering experiments using instrument across SNS and HFIR, and analyze resulting experiment data with theoretical modeling to understand materials behaviors in MEI focused areas. * Use other complementary characterization tools such as x-rays, electron microscopes, atomic probe tomography etc. to advance scientific understanding of materials. * Publish scientific papers and present results from this research at national and international meetings as appropriate. Basic Qualifications * PhD in physics, materials science, engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. * Hands on experience in neutron and/or X-ray scattering and data analysis, and other materials characterization tools * A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer- reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences * Strong written and oral communication skills Preferred Qualifications: * Background in alloys design/synthesis/processing, nuclear materials or advanced manufacturing. * Expertise in metallurgy, ceramics, material deformation or phase transformation behaviors. * Highly self-motivated, with the ability of creative thinking and working within a multi- disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems. Other Information: * Appointments will be a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. * Provide a current curriculum vitae including a list of publications and a two-page research statement describing research interest, scientific problems, and research plan for area of interests by using neutron scattering, when applying for this position * If you are selected for interview, you will be required to send in a minimum of two letters of reference * The date of your application must be within 5 years of the most recent degree, and all degree requirements must be complete before starting the appointment. The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation.
