Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov Overview The Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) of the Neutron Scattering Science Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking motivated candidates for an instrument scientist position in neutron imaging. With the advent of instruments such as the HFIR CG-1D cold neutron imaging beamline, it has now become possible to obtain high-spatial resolution 2 and 3-dimensional neutron imaging data of a series of advanced materials. Information about the CG-1D facility can be found at: http://neutrons.ornl.gov/imaging/ In this role, you will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron instrumentation, energy materials, engineering materials, and materials chemistry, etc. You will participate in research activities and user support using HFIR CG-1D beamline and will participate in TOF neutron imaging experiments at Spallation Neutron Source instruments VULCAN and SNAP. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development, construction, and commissioning of the planned Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) VENUS imaging beamline. Information about VENUS can be found at: http://neutrons.ornl.gov/venus/ Major Duties/Responsibilities You will report to the Materials Engineering Group Leader in NSD and will participate in research activities using CG-1D, primarily for, but not limited to, neutron radiography and computed tomography for energy materials, advanced materials such as additive manufacturing, engineering applications, biology and georgical research. You will also contribute to the development of time-of-flight imaging capabilities at the Spallation Neutron Source. * Conduct safe operation and user support for the CG-1D imaging beamline at the HFIR and for time-of- flight (TOF) imaging activities using the SNAP beamline at the SNS. * User support as a local contact, assistance with experimental setup, data acquisition, data analysis and publications. * Work within the neutron imaging team (Instrument Scientist, Scientific Associates, Engineers, Software Developers) and with scientists and other ORNL staff members to develop a strong materials science program using neutron imaging. * You will be expected to take a lead role in imaging sample environment design and testing, for example, of a temperature-controlled furnace optimized for imaging, and work directly with the user community to grow a novel research area such as the use of time-of-flight neutrons for advanced materials, etc. * Develop a high-quality in-house research program using imaging, publish research results in scientific journals * Support programs and facilities at HFIR and SNS that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week. * This position will require flexibility in work schedule, and support will be needed during off duty hours and weekends, in many cases, to assist with user experiments. * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements * You will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the individual researcher, his/her colleagues, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges. Qualifications Required Basic Qualifications: * Candidates within 3 years of their Ph.D. in Physics, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or similar background will be considered * Experience in neutron or x-ray imaging and computer analysis/programming/modeling using Python * Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems * Experience in neutron or x-ray technique development Preferred Qualifications: * Previous beamline support of a neutron imaging beamline at a user facility * Experience in both polychromatic and wavelength-dependent neutron imaging * Expertise in energy materials such as nuclear materials, energy storage, fossil fuel and renewal energy technologies * Neutron simulations using Monte Carlo based software (McStas and/or MCNP-X) * Experience in software reconstruction, 2D and 3D image visualization and quantitative data analysis Work Directions and Interfaces You will work with research staff in NSD and programmers in the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization group and other support groups.
