Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov The Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Instrument Scientist for the powder diffraction suite at the SNS. In this role you will report to the Diffraction Group Leader in NSD, and participate in research activities using the suite of powder diffractometers across a diverse range of fields. Examples include, but are not limited to: chemistry, in particular the structure and behavior of electrical energy storage materials; physics; materials science; and mineralogy and earth/planetary science using powder diffraction experimental and analysis techniques. This role is also key to safe operation and user support for the beamlines, which includes user assistance as local contact, helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. Major Duties/Responsibilities * Champions developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of the powder diffraction instruments and expand the user base. * Develop a high-quality personal research program using neutron powder diffraction, publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics, and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. This position supports programs and facilities at SNS that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week. * This position requires flexibility in work schedule, and support will be needed during off duty hours and weekends, in many cases, to assist with user experiments. * Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements * You will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the individual researcher, his/her colleagues, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges. Qualifications Required Basic Qualifications: * Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields * Two or more years of post-doctoral experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related fields * Experience in neutron and/or x-ray powder diffraction and total scattering instrumentation and analysis * Experience in developing software and sample environment for neutron diffraction * A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals * Demontstrated ability to develop an independent science program using the above techniques (a research plan should be supplied to demonstrate this). * Strong written and oral communication skills Preferred Qualifications: * Previous beamline support experience in a neutron or synchrotron x-ray central facility. * Experience with Rietveld and/or total scattering analysis/programming is highly desirable. * Ability to work with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and other research scientists from both academia and industry. * Self-motivated, with the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems. * Ability to work with other technical and scientific support groups to advance sample environment, data reduction and data analysis for neutron powder diffraction. * Programming proficiency in Python, C++, and/or Fortran is desirable. Work Directions and Interfaces This position will report to the Diffraction Group Leader. Candidate will work closely with research staff in NSD and staff in the support groups. The individual will be expected to collaborate with science programs across other directorates within ORNL and with external user groups. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm, .hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
