Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. Purpose: The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) http://neutrons.ornl.gov invites applications for the Clifford G. Shull Fellowship Program. This postdoctoral Fellowship Program, named for the 1994 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, is aimed at attracting outstanding early career researchers to continue on a path of scientific excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S Department of Energy missions and goals in neutron scattering science. The Shull Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering that utilize neutron techniques and/or advance neutron science including the physical, chemical, materials, biological, nuclear, and medical sciences. Major Duties/Responsibilities Shull Fellows carry out and develop research programs in a variety of disciplines (e.g. hard and soft condensed matter physics, biology, engineering, and materials chemistry) to enhance the knowledge of the structure and/or dynamical behavior of materials using neutron scattering as a primary tool; educate and promote the use of neutron scattering to new user communities; publish research results in scientific journals; and assist Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor scientists in the development of new instrumentation and optimized neutron sources to meet research program goals. This position is a fully-funded 24 month assignment, with an additional twelve months extension possible based on performance, with research support funding for travel, and materials and supplies. Shull Fellows are expected to contribute to the long term scientific mission of the Neutron Sciences Directorate in one or more of the areas of Quantum Materials, Materials Synthesis and Performance, Soft Molecular Matter, Biosciences, Advanced Neutron Sources, and Neutron Instrumentation and Optics. Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.* Qualifications Required A PhD. in condensed matter physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, biology, or related field is required. Previous experience in neutron or X-ray scattering is highly desired; however, outstanding candidates possessing related expertise are also encouraged to apply. Previous postdoctoral experience is highly desired. Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a significant publication record and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are essential. *Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin. Additional Requirements: The candidate must have completed their Ph.D. before his or her agreed upon start date. Qualified candidates must have received their Ph.D. no more than five years before the application submission date.. Current ORNL postdoctoral appointees and staff members cannot be considered.
