Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Purpose: The Engineering Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate with experience and expertise in engineering mechanics and neutron scattering. Applications are sought from highly creative and motivated individuals who will join an interdisciplinary team utilizing the 2nd Generation Neutron Residual Stress Facility (NRSF2) instrument (beamline HB-2B) at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) to study the residual stresses in engineering materials and study in-situ the elastic response of materials under applied mechanical loading. Additional information and specifications for this instrument may be found on the ORNL Neutron Sciences website: http://neutrons.ornl.gov/nrsf2/. It is expected that the candidate will have opportunities to use other neutron scattering instruments at SNS and HFIR to pursue their scientific interests over the course of their appointment. Major Duties/Responsibilities *Conduct original research on mechanical properties of advanced engineering materials using NRSF2 and other instruments at HFIR/SNS. *Write and publish high quality scientific papers on this research. *Assist with local contact duties for external Users on NRSF2 with complementary scientific interests. *Enhance and extend capabilities for data acquisition in collaboration with the data acquisition team at HFIR. *Assist or lead in developing and testing user-friendly data reduction and analysis software. * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements * Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics * The duties of this job will require the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting and standing for extended periods of time, working with sample environment equipment, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research. Qualifications Required Must have completed a Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or closely related discipline within the last 5 years to be considered. Applicants must have an understanding of stress/strain as it relates to engineering materials. Knowledge of mechanics of materials is a necessity. Must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills. Qualifications Desired: Prior user or postdoctoral experience on engineering beamlines at neutron sources (CW or TOF). It is preferred that the candidate has extensive knowledge in programming in Labview/Python for use in data analysis. The position would involve an opportunity to perform an extensive re-write/upgrade of the analysis software currently used on NRSF for data reduction. There is also a possibility for adding functionality to the current data acquisition software (Labview). Experience with MatLab would be useful. To apply, please send curriculum vitae, a brief description of research interests, and contact details for three academic references through the application system. For technical questions regarding the position, please contact Dr. Andrew Payzant (payzanta@ornl.gov), Chemical and Engineering Materials Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, PO Box 2008, MS-6475, Oak Ridge, TN 37831. Please reference this position title in your correspondence This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
