Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Purpose: The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience and expertise in electrochemistry and neutron scattering, with a strong emphasis on the design and characterization of energy storage materials. This position is shared between the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division (NDAV) and Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD). This position benefits from strong interactions with the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD) at ORNL and will comprise a diverse set of activities to expand capabilities for the in situ neutron characterization of interfacial phenomena in energy storage materials. Overview: As a member of this joint team, major responsibilities/duties will include improved design of in situ electrochemical cells, characterization of interfacial structures at electrolyte/electrode interfaces, as well as expanding the analytical capabilities of neutron reflectometry data. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, development of data reduction and analysis techniques, design and synthesis of energy storage materials, thin film growth, materials chemistry, and device fabrication and characterization. The successful candidate will also be responsible for interfacing with MSTD for the fabrication of thin film samples used in neutron scattering studies. Major Duties/Responsibilities * Further develop our energy storage material program by improving our chemical cell design and expanding our analytical modeling capabilities. * Take a lead role in the design and characterization of energy storage materials. * Interface with MSTD for the fabrication of thin films. * Perform neutron scattering experiments and analyze data. * Perform complementary characterization of studied materials (e.g. AFM, XRD, etc…). * Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer- reviewed journals in a timely manner * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements * Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics Qualifications Required * A PhD completed within the last 5 years in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or other relevant fields from an accredited institution * An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals * Expertise in neutron scattering and data analysis is essential * Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels. The ability to work as a member of a multi- disciplinary team is a critical asset. * Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience * Motivated and safety conscious * Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs with the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment * Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment * Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines Qualifications Desired: Experience neutron reflectometry and neutron diffraction, knowledge of characterization techniques e.g.AFM, UV-vis and XRD is highly desirable.
