Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. ORNL is also home of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OCLF), the Center for Nanophase Materials Science (CNMS) complemented by a large theory and materials science program. Purpose: Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire a senior scientist who will develop and lead a program that integrates new computational and modeling approaches to interpreting neutron scattering data applied to gain a predictive understand of materials synthesis and performance. The successful candidate will build and drive a high impact scientific program closely integrating neutron scattering, theory and high performance computing. Major Duties/Responsibilities * Responsible for establishing and executing a strategic plan to link neutron scattering and high performance computing methods for materials modeling. * Responsible for managing a team that establishes scientific leadership to develop advanced data analysis, modeling and simulation methods, and neutron scattering data. * Manages a multi-disciplinary team from different ORNL Directorates and different Divisions within NScD. * Works with Department of Energy and other key stakeholders to include University of Tennessee and other core universities to establish and maintain outstanding relationships. * Maintains and extends the outstanding and collaborative relationships between Neutron Sciences Directorate, Computational Sciences Directorate and Physical Sciences Directorate to develop a common vision for the future of modeling and simulation in materials science and neutron scattering. Qualifications Required PhD required in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Modeling, Computational Materials Science or other science related field. Must have five to ten years of Computational Materials Science and Modeling experience. It is expected that the candidate will demonstrate the experience and vision needed to advance the state of the art in modeling, theory and simulation extracting scientific knowledge from neutron scattering data. Must have at least five years of management experience working in a diverse research environment. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization. Must be able to present material related to neutron scattering and modeling to a variety of audiences. Qualifications Desired: Previous experience with developing strategies for connecting experimental data and materials simulations is preferred. Previous DOE experience with proposal writing and Field Work Proposals is desired. A demonstrated ability to collaborate and complete projects within a diverse scientific and cultural research community is preferred. Work Directions and Interfaces Reports to the NDAV Division Director. Interfaces with facility users and stakeholders, directors of other divisions within the Directorate, other ORNL divisions, partner laboratories, Department of Energy headquarters and the DOE site office.
