(Ref. no. M 2013/16) We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Institute of Complex Magnetic Materials at the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB), Germany. The HZB is a German National Laboratory and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres and has about 1100 employees. It hosts the Berlin Research Reactor (BERII), a user facility open to scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics of solids and liquids, the HZB provides the national and international research community with state-of-the-art neutron scattering equipment and expertise. Assignments: The successful candidate will be in charge of operating the double-axis diffractometer E4, one of the neutron instruments within the HZB user program. Responsibility for other neutron instruments is also possible. He/she should guide and help external user groups to plan, prepare and successfully perform their neutron experiments and guide them in data analysis. He or she will contribute to the further development of the instrument, especially in implementation of new experimental techniques and substantially contribute to the development of software to analyze position sensitive detector experimental data. It is expected that the candidate has a strong interest in his/her own scientific projects and will collaborate with colleagues within and outside HZB. Requirements: Candidates have to have Master degree in Physics or Chemistry and are required to have very good knowledge in the field of solid state physics and/or material science, good knowledge in Chemistry, Crystallography, Structure and Data analysis and Programming. Candidates should have good experimental skills, flexibility and ability to work within a team and with external user groups. We require very good communication skills, knowledge of English and readiness to take initiative and responsibility. Experience in the field of x-ray and neutron diffraction/scattering, use of magnetic fields, low temperatures and pressures are welcome. The appointment is for 3 years. Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV, two academic references, a list of publications and copies of degrees to the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Hahn-Meitner-Platz 1, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, quoting reference no. Ref. no. M 2013/16 (email: personalabteilung@helmholtz-berlin.de). The deadline for the application is 30 November 2013.
