We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at the institute Methods and Instruments for Neutron Scattering of  the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie Berlin. The Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie is a German National Laboratory and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres (HGF) and has about 1000 employees. To probe the structure and dynamics of condensed matter, HZB provides the national and international research community with state-of-the-art equipment and expertise with neutron and photon probes.

The institute G-I1 (Methods and Instruments for Neutron Scattering) successfully operates the Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrometer NEAT (see http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/neutrons/). The cold neutron chopper spectrometer NEAT is best suited to probe dynamic phenomena directly in space and time in the time domain 10-13 -- 10-10 s and on the length scale ranging from microscopic (0.5 Å) to nanoscale dimensions (up to about 50 nm). Examples of current NEAT applications are studies of structure-dynamics relationship in glasses, nanostructured materials, polymers, proteins, confined matter, molecular magnets, magnetic excitations, spin polarons.

Currently, NEAT undergoes a major instrumental upgrade including the development of the new instrumental capabilities including novel position sensitive detectors and in-situ sample characterization. Therefore a particular focus is on the development of advanced data collection methods by application of modern numerical modeling techniques.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the optimization of the secondary flight path and the development of the new data collection and data treatment software package using computer modelling and simulation methods. She/he will use neutron scattering experiments to refine, develop and benchmark computer models to understand dynamic processes that determine the functional properties in non-crystalline and crystalline matter on the molecular level.

The position is open to scientists who ideally hold (or will receive in the near future) a PhD in a physics-related discipline and are interested in the dynamics of glasses or molecular systems, material science or chemistry. Experience in  neutron scattering and/or numerical methods will be advantageous. Since the project involves a significant amount of computing the computer literacy is essential.

The appointment is for 3 years.
