Postdoctoral position (SF 2008/12)

Physics, chemistry, material science

The position is for 3 years and immediately available

Deadline: 15 December, 2008

The Berlin Neutron Scattering Centre, BENSC, at the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy (known before as Hahn-Meitner-Institut), Germany, seeks a highly motivated post-doc scientist who will join the team of the novel EXtreme Environment Diffractometer (EXED). EXED is designed for powder and single crystal neutron scattering research at extreme environments including the highest magnetic fields for neutron scattering worldwide. The instrument will start user operation as an innovative, variable and ultrahigh resolution time-of-flight diffractometer in 2009. In collaboration with the “High Field Magnet” team of HZB EXED will become a unique experimental facility which opens up new research opportunities for neutron scattering at unprecedented high magnetic fields.

The successful candidate will take an active part in the commissioning and development of areas of research at EXED. Knowledge of computer programming, and single crystal diffraction is highly desirable. A background in neutron or X-ray scattering, magnetism, crystallography or neutron instrumentation will be advantageous. The position provides young scientists with an excellent opportunity to broaden their experience and to develop their expertise. The successful candidate will have access to 30% of the beamtime on ALL neutron scattering instruments at BENSC for own research projects. Various tools for sample preparation (solid state synthesis laboratories with single crystal growth) and characterization techniques (Laue and powder XRD, cryomagnets up to 14.5 T equipped with different measurement options in the temperature range 10 mK - 1000 K) are available on site.

The Helmholtz Centre Berlin is a German National Laboratory and a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres and has about 1200 employees. BENSC (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/) is a user facility open to scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics of solids and liquids, BENSC provides the national and international research community with state-of-the-art neutron scattering equipment and expertise. The position is tenable for three years with a salary ranging from 35.000 to 50.000 € (gross income per annum) depending on age, family status and qualification. For further information about the position please contact Dr. Oleksandr Prokhnenko (+49-30-8062-3068, e-mail: prokhnenko@helmholtz-berlin.de) or Dr. Catherine Pappas (+49-30-8062-2046; e-mail pappas@helmholtz-berlin.de). Applicants should send a detailed CV, a list of publications, and copies of degrees to
