The workshop aims at evaluating the needs and opportunities of future short-wavelength light sources by gathering European scientists from different communities. It will gather a maximum of 70 participants. It will take place in Propriano, Corsica, from October the 10th to October, the 12th, 2004. The programme will consist of invited presentations. The workshop is opened to other participants. A limited number of student grants will also be available.

Background

The European Science Foundation has set up a network on Future Advanced Light Sources (FALS), chaired by I. Lindau, for the development of science by bringing together leading researchers to debate alternative light sources such as high order harmonics produced in gases, laser plasma sources, synchrotron radiation and Free Electron Lasers. A first exploratory workshop took place at Zurich (October 23-24, 2000) and this was followed by a first workshop in Berlin (Dec 8th-9th, 2003) on "Opportunities and challenges for atomic and molecular science at the European FEL and X-FEL sources", chaired by U. Becker and L. Avaldi. The second workshop "Needs and Opportunities for Future Advanced Light Sources" will broadly cover novel scientific opportunities with future advanced light sources and the technological challenges. Many critical issues are independent of the way the radiation is created, e.g. mechanisms to achieve shorter wavelengths, pulse peak-power, pulse shape, pulse jitter, synchronization between primary and secondary pulses (“pump-probe”), transform limited pulses (full longitudinal coherence), EUV and X-ray optics, detectors, non -linear phenomena and high-field effects in different media. The meeting should allow potential users to orientate themselves between the different new and proposed short-wavelength light sources in Europe, and to focus on proposed applications developing a vision of science for the future. For this purpose, a user guide with the different European sources will be prepared, in collaboration with the Laser I3, the synchrotron radiation I3, and Laserlab. The programme will comprise a broad overview of the field with selected talks by top people from scientific communities that do not meet and interact regularly.

  Travel Information

How to get there :

The Hotel, where the whole workshop will be held, is located in the southwest border of Propriano close to a secluded beach. Propriano is a small city nested on the fringe of the Valinco bay, at 70 km from Ajaccio (via N196) and 50 km from Figari (via N196).
The easiest way to get there is:

  •  Fly to Ajaccio: a group airplane fare has been negociated with Air France from Paris-Orly (flying time 1h40):
    Departure: Saturday,  Oct   9th,  15h55     -      Arrival 17h35 (AF 7574)
    Return:       Tuesday, Oct 12th 15h35        -       Arrival 17h15 (AF 7569)

Fly reservations can be made (as soon as possible) through the Air France company WEB site:    http://www.airfrance.com ,      lowest fare : 173.67 €.

A bus has especially been ordered  to make the airport-hotel transfers on both ways (about 1 h 15 long).

For those who wish to fly to Ajaccio with a different flight, you may eitheir rent a car, take a taxi (120 Euro one way !) or try some local bus (informations can be get at Autocar Ricci +33 (0)4 95 76 25 59).
